Starting an ecommerce business

Choose the first work for an ecommerce launch

Put the next decision in order instead of trying to build every channel, feature and workflow at once.

2 minute read · Practical guide

The key decision: Start with one customer, one workable offer and one complete route from order to delivery.

Define the first offer

Write down the product, intended buyer, target market and reason to choose the offer. Identify what is known and what still needs testing. Keep the first launch narrow enough that the team can explain the product and fulfil an order reliably.

Identify the dependencies

Some work cannot be completed until another decision is made. Product photography depends on an approved sample; a store catalogue depends on product data; payment setup depends on provider eligibility. Put these relationships on a simple list so effort does not accumulate around an unresolved starting point.

Build a budget around the workflow

Separate inventory, store setup, creative, launch activity and operating runway. Include deposits and recurring costs that would otherwise sit outside the initial quotation. Use a contingency assumption you can explain. A budget is a record of choices and uncertainty, not a promise that every cost is known.

Assign the work after checkout

Before attracting buyers, decide who confirms orders, updates stock, prepares parcels and answers customer questions. Write the first version of the returns and exception workflow. A launch with limited features can still have a complete service experience.

Set a short learning agenda

Choose a few questions the first orders should answer: can buyers understand the offer, can the team fulfil it, and does the contribution model hold? Record feedback and actual costs. Use those observations to decide whether the next investment belongs in a new channel, better content or stronger operations.
