See the cost of unsuccessful delivery

What are failed COD deliveries costing this batch?

A dispatched order is not always a completed sale. Model the deliveries you expect to succeed, the shipping spent on failed attempts and the contribution left across the whole batch.

MAKE THE INPUTS USEFUL

Before you begin.

Describe one dispatch batch

Enter orders dispatched, selling price and product cost per delivered order. Use a representative order value if baskets vary; the model applies that value to every expected delivery.

Include shipping in both directions

Outbound shipping applies to every dispatch attempt. Return shipping applies to failed orders. Enter the charges on those bases so unsuccessful attempts are not treated as free.

Test a realistic return-to-origin rate

Use the share of dispatched orders expected to fail delivery and return to origin. Try a second scenario to understand the impact of improving confirmation or delivery performance.

What your result means.

Expected contribution covers the whole batch after product costs on delivered orders and the entered shipping costs. Failed delivery shipping cost isolates outbound and return charges for unsuccessful attempts. Contribution per dispatch spreads the outcome across every attempt, helping you see the cost that successful-order reporting can hide.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Understand the decision.

Is a failed COD delivery the same as a customer return?

No. This calculator models return-to-origin from failed delivery using Orders dispatched and Return-to-origin rate. It reduces expected deliveries by that rate. Returns after a successful delivery, customer refunds and exchanges are not modelled here.

Should I count the full product cost as lost on every return?

No. This model assumes failed-delivery stock is fully recovered and resellable, and deducts product cost only for expected delivered orders. It charges outbound shipping on every dispatch and return shipping on failed orders. Track damaged, missing or unsellable stock separately.

Which delivery charges should I use?

Use Outbound shipping per attempt for every dispatched order and Return shipping per failed order for the return leg of failed deliveries. Failed delivery shipping cost includes both legs for those failed orders; Expected contribution also includes outbound shipping for successful deliveries.

How can I use the result to improve operations?

Compare scenarios, then examine address quality, confirmation records, courier outcomes and return reasons. The estimate helps size the issue; those records help identify the action.
